CULTURAL COOPERATION A Network for the Promotion of Cultural Exchange between Italy and the United States

The cultural cooperation between Italy and the United States is an extraordinary bridge of exchanges, initiatives, and events linking the past and present of two countries founded on different histories yet united by common roots and values in a valuable and structured relationship. Their interactions are embodied in a wide range of cooperative projects between public and private institutions covering the figurative arts, music, humanities and social studies, science, performing arts, and design. Particular focus is placed on promoting the study in the United States of Italian as a major instrument for cultural dialogue and cooperation. The promotional and cultural cooperation activities conducted by Italy in the United States, coordinated by the Embassy in Washington, are supported by the network of Italian Cultural Institutes (IIC), located in:

New York Washington Los Angeles Chicago San Francisco

They work in synergy with the cultural initiatives sponsored by the Consulates in loco as well as by the Consular offices in:

Miami Houston Boston Philadelphia Detroit Newark

Cultural cooperation between Italy and the United States is given further impetus and force by the presence of a large and well-rounded community of Americans of Italian descent who contribute to the advance of their cultural heritage through a wide-ranging system of cultural associations and organizations (see, for example, NIAF, OSIA).

The strategy for promoting Italy’s culture in the United States is built around a continuous effort to seek out collaboration with local institutions and representatives that responds also to the demand from and the expectations of the U.S. cultural world. From this perspective, the synergy between our cultural promotion system and that of the other European Union countries is assuming an increasingly wider role by offering the American public cultural events with a European and comparative viewpoint.
